Types of Containers

Dry Van or dry container

They are the standard containers and the most used on the market. Of basic construction, metallic, hermetically sealed and without refrigeration or ventilation. They have different sizes: 20′, 40′ or 40′ High Cube. The High Cube category, on the other hand, provides a 13% increase in internal cubic capacity and is intended for heavier loads (coal, tobacco, etc.).

It is suitable for any type of dry cargo: pallets, boxes, bags, machines, furniture, etc.

Reefer or refrigerated container

Reefer containers provide a temperature controlled environment. They have a power supply that connects to energy sources during transport. This allows products to be transported at a constant temperature throughout the entire journey. You have the possibility to lower the temperature from -18° to 30°. There are models of 20 and 40 feet, in addition to the High Cube.

This type of container is especially recommended for transporting food or products that need a low storage temperature.

Open Top
Same size as above, but open at the top as they have a removable canvas roof. The goods may stand out but, in that case, supplements are paid depending on how much load has stopped being charged for this excess.

These containers facilitate the transport of bulky cargoes.

Flat Rack

Just like the Open top, but also lack side walls and even, in some cases, front and back walls. They are used for atypical loads and pay supplements in the same way as Open Tops.

Open Side
Same size as standard 20' or 40' containers, with the difference that they only have one side opening. This makes it possible to transport very long goods, the dimensions of which prevent them from being loaded through the rear door.

Tank or tank container
Used for the transport of liquids, from hazardous chemicals such as toxic, corrosive, highly combustible, as well as oils, milk, beer, wine, mineral water, etc.. They have the same dimensions as a Dry Ban, but their structure is different, as they include a polyethylene tank inside.

Hinterland is a German word meaning "the land behind". The term was associated with the area of a port where materials for export and import are stored and shipped, subsequently the use of the word expanded to include any area under the influence of a particular human settlement.

1- In What year is the Port of Bilbao founded?

The documented foundation of the Port of Bilbao dates from 700 years ago, but the River, where it was born, was used as natural shelter much before.
In 1902, an extensive water area was prepared, sheltered by the Santurtzi Breakwater and the Secondary Breakwater at Algorta: thus the Port had reached the sea, and become one of the largest maritime infrastructures of the Continent.
